Time made extraordinary
In 2006, architect Akira Watanabe designed a separate villa structure to be added to the one-hectare site.
This building, constructed with natural elements of wood and earth, draws on the tradition of sukiya architecture while developing a modern expression of Japanese aesthetics for a harmonious overall design.
The rammed-earth walls made of compacted soil and sand from the Fuji River blend into the landscape, changing from moment to moment as the shifting sun reveals the hardness and softness of the soil. Yoshino cedar is used for the roof as an unprocessed, living material, with beams laid side by side and held down from above.
The water basin is filled with spring water from Mt. Fuji, cooling the air in summer and reflecting the warm rays of sun in winter. The building’s silhouette ripples on its surface, pleasing the eyes in any season.
The villa contains just eight guest rooms.
Layouts include Japanese-style rooms with futons, Western-style rooms with spacious balconies, and a maisonette with a mix of Japanese and Western elements. All rooms look out on the pine grove and water basin fed by springwater from Mt. Fuji.
Akira Watanabe's final work, Numazu Club pleases the eyes and offers moments of blissful escape from the ordinary.
